ABOUT
In this interdisciplinary project, taking Zhangjiakou Wanlong Ski Resort as an example, my classmates in landscape and graphic design and I cooperated to redesign the entire off-season ski resort experience process for Wanlong. With the user experience and traditional landscape design, we used interactive technology and neuroscience for a better experience in ski resorts and more off-season profits.

MY ROLE
Team Lead, research data analysis, persona, user journey maps, ideation sketching, wireframing. Provided design solutions and designing the high-fidelity UI.

◉   BACKGROUND

Seasonal problem in ski resorts is serious.

On average...

Seasonal problems in ski resorts are quite normal due to geographical locations and climates, which is especially evident in China. Although some ski resorts are also active in developing off-season tourism projects, not many people go there because of problems such as insufficient attraction and resource utilization, and the entire site is relatively desolate. Therefore, to improve this situation, more attractive points need to be excavated, and better services can be provided.

◉   Problem Statement

The experience in Chongli ski resort can be improved.

Chongli, a district in Zhangjiakou, is a typical representative of Chinese ski resorts. Since 1980, the ski resort has gained rapid development, but mostly it has been idle for several months in the non-snow season without proper improvement. We hope to make use of natural resources like mountains and forests to establish a connection between people in cities and nature, and try to create a resonance between artificial and natural forces.

◉   ethnographic research

What's the real situation of the ski resort?

We have obtained some information about the Wanlong Ski Resort, such as topography, vegetation, location of facilities, to make good preparation for subsequent designs and improvement.

When investigating these facilities in depth, we found problems, which brought bad experience to tourists.

Summary:

•   The planned ski trails should be adjusted.
•   The road should be rectified with the addition of stepping and rest platforms.
•   The off-season activities should be increased.
•   The land should be improved to be more fertile .

◉   Interview

What are the attitudes of operators and tourists towards ski resorts in the off-season?

In order to better understand people's needs, we interviewed different types of people to see if there are opportunities.

Summary:

•   The project design can be considered upon the whole age.
•   It is necessary to pay attention to the emotions of different people in modern times.
•   The site area needs to be improved in design to become easier to walk on.

◉   Brainstorming

How can we enhance people's experience in off-season ski resorts and heal their emotions?

In order to solve the problems raised above, our team analyzes through brainstorming and tries to come up with possible strategies. Among all feasible options, we hope to find a countermeasure that can not only improve the natural environment, re-energize the site, but also enhance people's emotional experience.

◉   defining our solution

An off-season ski resort technology hub where anyone can get in touch with healing activities, local services and timely feedback at any time.

Join our team

We plan to use the off-season ski resort as a healing area for urban residents to escape from the high-pressure reality. At the same time, hardware can be used to monitor the healing status of people at different experience places, and the guiding screen can provide real-time feedback on the experience of the places.

◉   Space Design

How to design for different types of people?

For more accurate routes corresponding to different emotions, I divided the population into 2 groups and divided the emotions into 5 levels that matched the healing programs in different areas. These events will not affect the ski resort's winter operations.

◉   site Design

Where to plan the different types of areas?

On the original site, the members of landscape design and I modified the hiking path and put 7 functional areas into the site according to the topography and human needs.

In addition, I arranged the designed healing monitoring points in the corresponding areas according to the designed roads.

◉   route Design

What routes do we have?

Based on the planned project and site, I designed five emotional healing routes that people can match to their emotional needs. These five routes can be suitable for five types of emotions: positive, peaceful, anxious, angry and depressed.

◉   EEG Testing

Brainwave overview.

Using EEG hardware and Arduino, we obtained brain wave data at different frequencies, which can be divided into five common rhythms according to frequency bands, respectively, corresponding to different brain states. The strong and weak change of each rhythm of brain wave can reflect the change of brain activity state, which is directly related to people's emotion. In our experiment, we extracted theta, alpha and beta waves that were significantly associated with the experience, representing stress, relaxation and tension, respectively. Then they begin to visually transform their emotions.
